Graduate programmes
at Latvia University of Agriculture

Every student of Master’s programme must submit a thesis which is a summary of his/her scientific research. Master's thesis can be completed as a theoretical and/or practical research work carried out by the candidate, demonstrating ability of the candidate in usage of modern methods of research and creative analysis. Preparation of the thesis takes place during the entire period of graduate studies, simultaneously with theoretical studies. Presentation of Master's thesis is organised at the end of studies. The supervisor of Master's thesis can be a LLU professor or a qualified specialist from a research institution in Latvia or abroad.

The primary aim of graduate studies at Latvia University of Agriculture (LLU) is to train highly qualified specialists for research work and teaching.

LLU encourages applications for graduate studies according to LLU Admission Rules for Master’s studies.

Duration of the graduate studies is two years (for part-time students – maximum of 4 years); duration of external studies is not limited.

All Master's degree programmes require a total of 80 CP. One CP- subject point- is equivalent to 16 academic classroom hours or to one week of studies or to two weeks of practical training.

Structure of the graduate programmes is as follows:
theoretical course- 50 CP,
 scientific practice – 5-15 CP,
 Master's thesis- 20- 25 CP.

Theoretical course consists of 4 parts:

-humanities (8-10 CP): compulsory courses – philosophy of science, specialised course in foreign language; electives - rhetoric, psychology, adult education, sociological investigation, additional foreign language, etc.

- general studies (6-8 CP). Compulsory courses - mathematics or biometry. Electives - international economic relations, management, actual problems of national economics, specialised courses in computer sciences, etc.

- general subjects of speciality (12-14 CP), including research methodology.

- speciality studies (10-12 CP)-  in accordance with the concentration of studies.

Study process is divided into 2 parts.

First three semesters involve work in auditoriums. Each candidate has to pass written examination in 15 subjects.

Fourth semester is provided for research- elaboration of Master’s thesis.
